Vegetable Steamed Momos – Veg Momos is one of the most popular and loved streets foods in North India. We can find a variety of veg and non-veg momos at every alternate street food vendor which are quite economical and handy to eat.

Momos are little dumplings originated in Tibet but now are hugely popular in India. Traditional Momos are made with flour dough stuffed with a variety of fillings like mixed vegetables, paneer, mushroom, chicken etc and further steam cooked. But, now a days we can also find fried, baked and roasted momos as well.

These are combined with a special momo chutney or a sauce which is very spicy and tangy.

Not only at the street food vendors, even the big luxury hotels serve momos in a beautiful bamboo steamer cum serving box which look very elegant and enough to test your patience to grab those beautiful little dumplings. 🙂

Ingredients

To make the dough

  • 2 Cups all purpose flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • water to knead the dough

To make the stuffing

  • 1 cup cabbage (very finely chopped)
  • 1/2 cup carrot (very finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper(crushed)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger (finely chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 medium sized onion (finely chopped)
  • 1-2 green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

Notes/Tips to follow

  1. To make the filling, you can use any seasonal veggies of your choice but make sure that all the veggies should be finely chopped.
  2. You can also make the filling with the left over sabzi or vegetable.
  3. Mushrooms, paneer or broccoli can also be added.
  4. To make the momo sheet, do not roll it very thick or very thin because it it will remain thick, it will not be cooked and remain chewy and sticky and if will be thin then it will tear while steaming.
  5. You can add or skip the sauces as per your choice like chilli sauce or schezwan sauce etc.

Step wise recipe – Vegetable Steamed Momos

For making the dough

  1. Take flour in a mixing bowl add a pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon oil and mix well
  2. Gradually add water and knead to make a semi soft dough and keep aside.

For making the momo stuffing

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in kadhai and add chopped ginger.

2. Add chopped onions and tomatoes and saute for a minute or 2 until onions turn translucent.

3. Add finely chopped carrot and cabbage.

4. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes until the vegetables are cooked well.

5. Add soy sauce, salt and crushed pepper and mix well and turn off the heat.

For making the momos

  1. Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it using a rolling pin. Place some stuffing at the flattened dough and make pleats by folding the edges and twist it. Repeat the procedure for the other momos as well and keep aside.

2. To make steam, add 2 cups of water in a kadhai or pan. Place a momo steamer basket or a bamboo steamer in the kadhai and cover with a lid to make steam for 10 minutes. Further place all the momos in the steamer basket and cook for 10-15 minutes by covering the lid.

3. After 15 minutes, momos are cooked and ready to be served. Enjoy with the sauce.
