The celebration for Ganesh Chaturthi is incomplete without the traditional sweet or prasaad of Modaks which is supposed to be the favorite food lord Ganesha. 🙂

Modak is a traditional Maharashtrian recipe which is made on the auspicious ocassion of Ganesh utsav as a prasaad to please the god.

This recipe is made with rice flour dough stuffed with the filling of jaggery and coconut. We can also add the variety of dry fruits & nuts as per our choice.

Now a days, everyone has become very choosy about the tastes, hence they are coming up with a lot of different varieties of modaks like chocolate modak, fried modak, mawa modak, biscuit modak, sugarfree modak, multi-colored modak and many more. But, the ones made with jaggery & coconut are the basic & most traditional form of modaks whose recipes I am sharing here.

In this recipe I have also given a little twist to the traditional modaks. Instead of using rice flour I have used all purpose flour to make the outer covering and instead of steaming I have baked the modaks in an air fryer 🙂 Here is the detailed recipe for making the Baked Modak recipe |baked modak without oven (Ganesh Chaturthi Special) along with the pictures:

Ingredients for Baked modak without oven

To make outer covering:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons desi ghee
  • 1/4 tablespoon salt
  • water to knead the dough

To make the filling:

  • 1/2 cup jaggery (Gud)
  • 1 cup dessicated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1tablespoon water (optional)

Note/ Tips to follow:

  • I have not used any dry fruits or nuts in this recipe as to keep the auntentic flavors of coconut and jaggery. You can use any nuts like cahsew, almonds, dates, raisins or any dry fruit ofyour choice.
  • Sesame seeds can also be added to the fillingalong wit other dryfruits.
  • You can also deep fry these modaks.
  • Steamed modaks are usually made ofrice flour but I have tried to make in a different manner.

Stepwise recipe for Baked Modak:

To make the dough:

1. Take all purpose flour in a mixing bowl. Add baking 1/4 tablespoon salt & 2 tablespoons ghee it. Mix well.

2. Gradually add water and star kneading to make a tight dough. Apply some oil on the top of the dough and keep aside to rest for 15 minutes.

To make the filling:

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a kadhai.

2. Add 1/2 cup jaggery to it and stir until it starts to caramalize and keep stirring to avoid burning and sticking to the bottom of the pan.

3. Now add dessicated coconut to it.

4. Mix jaggery and coconut well to combine together.

5. Add a little water for some mositure if required and stir well. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down.

To make the Modaks:

1. Take a medium sized portion of the dough and dust it with some dry flour further roll it with a rolling pin upto a medium thickness.

2. Put a spoonfulf of the jaggery and coconut mixture on the flattened base.

3. Grease the edges with some water to make pleats and seal them.

4. Now, to make the pleats by taking one corner of the base and press it towards inner side. Similarly make multiple pleats in the same manner.

5. Collect all the pleats together and push inside to seal them to give a modak shape further press the upper corner of the modak gently to smoothen it.

6. Repeat the same process to make other modaks.

7. Finally, grease the modaks with a little ghee and keep in an air fryer or oven pre heated ate 180 degrees and bake for 20-25 minutes. Baked modak without oven are ready to be served.
